My parents dread this day. Commuters and passers-by get sprayed (or drenched) in water. The only way to avoid this unfortunate fate is to travel by car. But with the prices of gas soaring up these days, I think it would be better to stay at home.
I guess I inherited my parents' dislike for this celebration. My dad considers it a day when San Juan folks would go crazy and throw water at anyone they see. There's even this rumor circulating (every year) that some people would use dirty water from the sewage drain and throw it at people. And another rumor saying that one of the local residents was shot by an angry politician who got thrown water.
Good thing I drove to work today, as a precaution. And I avoid the streets where all the celebrants are throwing water at each other. I also noticed that certain parts of the city are free from these water spraying activities, namely the exclusive subdivisions and the streets where the more affluent people live in. The more aggressive water sprayers seem to gather near the municipal area, and the places where the less privileged people reside.
