New Lego Toys from Shell

Looks like I will be buying gasoline from Shell for the next few months. Despite Greenpeace's campaign, Shell has launched its last collectable Lego Ferari car sets.

This year's collection includes four Ferari cars and two play sets (with minifigs). I was hoping they'd add more minifigs this year, but I guess two is better than none. I am planning to get the two play sets and probably the blue and red Ferrari cars.

Old Toys and New Toys

Just finished watching Toy Story 3 with the kids. I'm glad that Aaron enjoyed watching it, even though he's just two years old. I guess he loved the animation and the idea of toys moving around. He instantly recognized Mr. Potato Head since we bought him his own Mr. Potato Head months ago.

He took an instant liking to Buzz Lightyear. I was expecting he'd like Woody more. The movie made me think of the old toys I had back when I was still a kid. I had an odd collection of trucks, cars, stuffed animals, and Lego. Most of these toys got lost or broken, but the only durable ones are my Lego collection.

Aaron still plays with some of my old matchbox cars and planes. But I'm slowly training him so he can play with Lego sets when he's much older. So far he's loving my old Duplo collection -- with the old town set where he can create houses, cars, and rocket ships (with my help).

My Lego Investments

I had some extra cash the other month and decided to invest it on another Lego set. Good thing SM Megamall was having a mall-wide sale that time. Toy Kingdom was offering a 10 percent discount on all their products, including Lego sets.

So I decided to buy the Medieval Market set from the Lego Castle collection.


This would be my third Castle Set, along with the Dwarf Mines and the Castle Siege. I both the other two sets for a nice price of 10k last year.




I've wrapped the three unopened sets in plastic and kept them in our storage cabinet. I'm planning to sell the three boxes in a few years. Hopefully the prices for these unopened castle sets would have doubled or tripled by then. Good luck to me.

Baranggay Lego 2

I still have some remaining Lego pieces to do a couple of buildings for the "Baranggay Lego" themed set. So I came up with a Barber shop and a Two-in-one carinderia/celphone shop (with a mini grotto at the back). I also had some spare pieces to create a pinoy "Kalesa" -- one of my pet peeves while traveling in Manila.Hopefully I can take some pictures of the entire set, and add a couple more "shanty houses", and a jeepney or tricycle, for the barrangay collection to be complete.

Baranggay Lego

The other day, I got to clean up my old Lego pieces and decided to build some stuff. I was inspired by the buildings and houses I saw while commuting to and from work. So I decided to create my own “Baranggay Lego” collection.

Imagine a Lego set that depicts third world Philippines. From the squalid shanty towns, make-shift buildings and the people that inhabit them.

That’s why I decided to make three initial buildings that would form this “Baranggay Lego”. So far I have created a sari-sari store, a vulcanizing shop, and a junk shop.

New Lego Hogwarts Castle

With the new Harry Potter movie and book coming out, Lego is coming out with its new updated Hogwarts castle set. Too bad the local stores aren't selling any of the Harry Potter Lego products anymore. I think this set would be a nice collection since it contains basically all the major characters (including a large Hagrid -- which is a separate character in previous sets), a nifty castle structure, and a couple of skeletal horses.

Lego Exhibit at SM Megamall

After so many years, I finally visited a Lego exhibit. The last time I saw a Lego exhibit was when I was 12 or 13 years old (in Greenhills). Back then, the lego creations were more impressive and breath taking. The lego sets right now have fewer bricks and more accessories.

At least Lego is being promoted again here in Manila. I think Toy Kingdom is now the official distributor of Lego. Gift Gate disposed of its remaining lego sets and decided to let go of selling the bricks.

Forbidden Goods in Divisoria

Jen and I went gift hunting at Divisoria today. Despite the passing of typhoon "Reming", there were a lot of people shopping at "168" and Divisoria Mall. I met up with Jen in that nameless toy mall (with the big escalator) between Divisoria Mall and Juan Luna.

There were a lot of cheap toys inside the building. Jen spent a couple of hours scouting the place, and she finally bought a toy machine gun for one of her relatives. I discovered a fake Monopoly set (obviously made in China) selling for just 150 pesos. It's a pretty cheap boardgame set, and I was tempted to buy one. But then again, I wasn't sure if the imitators got the community cards, tokens, and property cards printed correctly.

When we got out of the building, we stumbled upon a stall selling fake Legos. These fake Legos were being sold for 35, 65 and a hundred pesos. It featured sets from various Lego themes - from the Castle sets, Paradiso sets, and Lego Town.

Out of curiosity, Jen and I bought one set and examined the contents. These fake Legos were obviously patterned after the original - even the swords and horses looked like the original Lego pieces.

Lego Sale at Robinson's Place

If you have the time, you might want to drop by Robinson's Place. There is a weekend salke and Gift Gate is disposing it's last few lego sets. Aside from the 99 peso assorted brick packs, all Harry Potter lego box sets are on 50% discount.

New Lego Toys

I grew up playing Lego. I was seven or eight when my aunt gave me my first Lego set. It was a factory/construction set, with various cogs, wheels, and battery-powered motors. I used this basic set to create things from cars, boats, spaceships, and miniaturized towns. In the following years, I got more Lego sets from my relatives. I got a Lego Castle box set from my Uncle and a Lego Technic Car from my Godfather.

I could say that playing with Lego helped me develop a good imagination. It helped me create different worlds and objects. I remember bring some friends over to my house and we'd spend the afternoon paying with my Lego set (this was before the advent of Atari and Apple computers).

I stopped playing Lego but I still kept an eye out for new Lego sets. Over the years, I've seen Lego expand into all sorts of themes. From pirate ships and ninja temples to Star Wars and Harry Potter sets. These newer sets look interesting but they are a bit expensive. They are also composed of bigger pieces, which can be easily assembled. There's not that much challenge to make them.

Currently, Lego has expanded its line to cover other cartoon-related products. There are Lego versions of "Avatar the Last Airbender", "Batman", and even "Spongebob". Here are some of the products I discovered in the Lego dot com website.

These new sets are nice and I want to look at the actual sets. Unfornuately Gift Gate is not selling any new Lego models right now. I think they are disposing of their old lego stocks. The good news is that Gift Gate is selling small packs of Lego at 99 pesos per pack. It's a good bargain for those who are starting their lego collection or those who looking for particular lego parts.
