Yesterday I came across an article in the Philippine Inquirer, claiming that the Philippines ranked 17th as one of the happiest places on Earth. Other third world countires, such as Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica and Panama, belong to the top five in the Happy Planet Index.
So does this mean that people from third world countries are happier compared to people from developed countries such as the United States (150th), Canada (111th), Singapore (131st), or Japan (95th)?
I also noticed that these top five countries are predominantly Catholic/Christian in faith. Does this mean that Christians live happier lives?
Perhaps the stress level here is lower, and the family ties are stronger. Or maybe the consumerist/commercialism attitude is not as strong in the Philippines? At least this is something that we Filipinos can be proud of.
