Teething Blues

Last week, Aaron's got teething fever. It started out with the typical stuffy nose. Jen and I thought he'd be okay once his upper molars come out. Apparently we were wrong.

After five days of running nose, Aaron began coughing. Jen became worried since this was the first time this happened. He always catches a cold whenever a tooth comes out. But this time it was different. It was an upper molar coming out.

We gave him some cough medication but it didn't help. A couple of days later, Aaron had fever. We brought him to his pediatrician and the doctor prescribed three different medicines -- one for his cough, one for his fever, and an antibiotic syrup.

It was a challenge taking care of him. Aaron hated the medication. All three medicines were sugary syrups that had an awful bitter taste. Jen and I had to feed him each medicine in three to five small doses. Sometimes he'd vomit out everything and we had to start feeding him the drug all over again.

Eventually we found a technique that made the entire process easier (for us) and bearable (for Aaron). We had to feed him some of his favorite food in between each dose to cancel the medicine's bitter aftertaste.

It was a hellish weekend, but Jen and I managed to survive. Aaron is now doing well. His fever broke a few days ago, but he still has cough and running nose. We're still feeding him the medication, but he's grown accustomed to the taste of the syrup (so less struggling and resistance on his part).

This is one parenting merit badge for us. We learned a lot about Aaron and how to take care of him when he is sick. At least we'll be ready when the next big molar comes out.
